Day Six

Friday, August 1, 2008. The Lure of the Kal-Haven Trail.
The Kal-Haven State Park is a 34.5 mile trail running from South Haven to Kalamazoo. It is built along an old rail corridor. The trail itself is really nice. It has a wide, well-maintained path and most of what we took was covered with a tree canopy. It is open year-round to walking, jogging, biking, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, and snowmobiling.

Somewhere on the Internet (famous last words) we saw there was some kind of restaurant available in Lacota, 7 miles from the start at South Haven. We thought it would be a good trip to walk there, eat lunch and then walk back for a 14 mile round trip.

We got a later than expected start while Dan fixed some things at work and then we started on our way. Without a map, because neither place we stopped at had any.

We finally get to Lacota, but all we found is the Post Office, and a few houses. Someone was having a garage sale and we asked them if there was a restaurant nearby. They told us South Haven was the closest. We asked if there was a gas station convenience store and they mentioned there was one in Kibbie, 3 miles back.

So, after a small snack that I had packed we started back to Kibbie. When we arrived we really did not see anything nearby and decided to just continue back along the trail to South Haven.

We were pretty beat when we got back.

Samuel was a real trooper. He chose not to walk and rode in his stroller the whole time. We weren't too upset because we could make better time. We were very eager to get back, especially the last 4 miles!

So, we did our half-marathon and now don't feel guilty about the 2 trips to Sherman's Ice Cream! :-)
